One of my best friends and I recently (today!) got into A Midsummers Night Dream by Shakespeare. I got the role of Hermia- which i am really excited about, and my friend got Titania, who in this version of the play, makes out with Bottom quite a view times. She is really nervous and i don't quite know what to say to her. Any advice? My friend is nervous about kissing in a play we just got into- any advice for her?
She needs to remember that it's Titania (who is under Puck's spell) kissing Bottom, it's not her kissing the actor playing Bottom. Faking it is probably a bad idea, as in a small theatre it'll be pretty obvious; it should be a stage kiss - ie mouth closed! The first time they rehearse it, the director should have a closed set - anyone who isn't in the scene should not be there - to help them feel comfortable with it. I've worked on loads of plays where actors have to kiss, and they treat it like any other piece of blocking, which is exactly the way to deal with it - if they make a big deal of it, it will be a big deal. If they don't make a fuss, it won't be a problem. My friend is nervous about kissing in a play we just got into- any advice for her?
Ooh, Midsummer night's Dream...awesome! :) Don't tell her to fake it- it will be super obvious. There's not much she can do. Do keep reminding her that she's not kissing the dude playing Bottom, it's Titania kissing Bottom. And even if she doesn't want to kiss him, Titania does. All I can say is stay in character, and if people make fun of her, ignore it. They're just immature ;) Good luck!
once they practice it will get natural, like no big deal.
your director will probley make them doing during pre production week( the week right before the show)
tell her not to be nervous, it should be fun kissing guys! (epically if there cute! hah)
Can't they fake it, but make it look real?
